The 50 year old Christening Robe
On the 2nd May 2010, the Australian Branch of the Dutch family celebrated the Christening of Noah Joshua van den Driest, son of Julian and Angela and brother of Laney, also twelfth grandchild of Joe and Valerie. The Christening ceremony took place at St.Anthony's Church in Kingscliff by Parish Priest, Father Jim Griffin, followed by a morning tea with family and friends.
Noah Joshua created history by wearing a Christening Robe which had been sent from Oma and Opa van den Driest in Holland to Australia in 1960 for the Christening of Joe and Valery's first born, Anthony. Since then, that same robe has been worn at the Christening of each of the following children Rick, Mike, Tim and Julian. In later years, the robe was again used for the Christening of the grandchildren as they came along.
How proud would Opa and Oma van den Driest be, to know that their gift of a Christening Robe would be used by the Australian van den Driest family for fifty years! And it still looks like new.
Drusius in Vlaamse Stam
The article Drusius and his family. Genealogical and heraldic notes, written by secretary Marcel van den Driest, appears in the next issue of magazine Vlaamse Stam (jrg. 46, No. 1, January-February 2010). The article gives a brief overview of his life and family, and addresses the family crest that he claimed. Finally, the article contains an overview of the genealogy Van den Driessche from Oudenaarde.
Through this publication on the largest genealogical platform in Flanders, we hope to get in touch with other researchers who may have additional information. The article also forms the concluding part of the Communication Plan Drusius, in which the external communication was arranged of the discovery that Drusius used our coat of arms. The plan included a presentation at the familymeeting in Westkapelle (last October), correspondence to relevant institutions and individuals and the publications on this website and in the coming bulletin (2009).
The scholar Drusius is not only subject of research by our family. At the moment Theodor Dunkelgrün, Chicago University, studies the correspondence of Drusius in London. In late May he gives a lecture at Exeter College, Oxford University, titled: Joannes Drusius' (1550-1616) discovery of Jewish Literature. Seminar on the Reading of Hebrew and Jewish Texts in the Early Modern Period. Date: May 27, 2010, 14:30 uur. If you wish to attend this lecture please contact info@vandendriest.nl.
At the end of May 2009 Joe & Valerie went for a holiday to Sydney, where a Welcome Wall has been erected in Darling Harbour. The Wall was specially set up in honour of six million immigrants who have arrived in Australia since its first settlement over 200 years ago.
Joe's family arranged for his 76th birthday to have his name registered on the website of the Welcome Wall and it is also engraved on panel 51 of that wall.
Now that is name is included as the first immigrant to Australia of the family Van den Driest, future generations of our family can read his name and know their heritage.
Michael van den Driest
In earlier centuries the surname Van den Driessche was a common one throughout Flanders. It is therefore not surprising that some people with that name are mentioned in the Fund Pleisier, a genealogy section of the population of Antwerp from the 14th to the 17th century.
For instance Wouteren Aelbrechts van den Driessche (1428). Furthermore, pasteybackere Franchois vanden Driessche, notary Jan vanden Driessche (both in 1577) and Anthoni vanden Driessche, who moved from Antwerp to Dendermonde around 1592. Read the full review here.
The study was carried out by J.A. Pleisier from Bergen op Zoom and M. Akkermans from Merksem.
Wednesday, April 29th Diny van den Driest-Eshuis from Oost-Souburg received a royal decoration. Mayor of Vlissingen Dijkstra appointed her, on behalf of the Queen, a member of the Order of Orange-Nassau.
She received the award for her participation in the church in the residential Zoute Viever Oost-Souburg, her visits to needy residents, her work for the parish and for the Protestant Christian Elderly Bond, which she chairs.
